Fixture replacement and upgrades
Swapping a fixture looks simple, but three things decide whether it goes smoothly: the condition of the existing box, whether the box is secured to structure, and whether the supply conductors are long enough and in good condition. Older boxes in South Florida homes are often the limiting factor, and we replace them when needed.
Recessed lighting adds even, glare-free light. Placement matters as much as fixture choice — spacing, beam angle, and color temperature determine whether a room reads warm or clinical. Housings must also be rated for their location, including insulation contact and damp areas such as covered patios and showers.
Dimmers deserve attention with LED lamps. A dimmer designed for incandescent loads frequently causes flicker, buzz, or a limited dimming range with LEDs. We match the control to the actual load.
Ceiling fans
A ceiling fan is a moving load, and it must hang from a box listed for fan support. A standard light box is not, no matter how solid it feels. When we install a fan we confirm or replace the box, verify blade clearance to the floor and walls, and balance the assembly so it runs quietly.
Wobble, ticking, or a fan that hums on low usually points to mounting, blade balance, or an incompatible speed control rather than a defective motor.
Safety first
Please do not hang a fan from an existing light box or work overhead on a ladder with the circuit energized. Both are common causes of injury in do-it-yourself installations.
Questions we hear
Can a ceiling fan go where a light fixture is now?
Only if the box is rated to support a fan. A standard light box is not, so the box usually has to be replaced with a fan-rated one.
Why do my LED lights flicker on a dimmer?
Most often the dimmer is not compatible with the LED driver, or the fixture is below the dimmer's minimum load. Matching the dimmer to the lamps normally resolves it.
Do recessed lights need special housings near insulation?
Yes. Fixtures in insulated ceilings must be rated for insulation contact. Using the wrong housing is a fire risk.
