GFCI & AFCI
Two very different protective devices, often confused. Here is what each one does and why a tripping device is information, not a nuisance.
GFCI: protects people
A ground-fault circuit interrupter compares the current leaving on the hot conductor with the current returning on the neutral. If a small imbalance appears — current finding another path, possibly through a person — it opens the circuit in a fraction of a second.
That is why GFCI protection is associated with kitchens, bathrooms, laundry areas, garages, outdoor receptacles, and anywhere near water. In our climate, outdoor and poolside locations are especially prone to moisture-related tripping.
One GFCI device can protect several downstream receptacles. That is why a dead outlet in a bathroom is sometimes solved by resetting a GFCI in the garage.
AFCI: protects property
An arc-fault circuit interrupter watches for the electrical signature of arcing — the kind produced by a damaged cord, a nail through a cable, or a loose terminal. Arcing can generate enough heat to ignite surrounding material without drawing enough current to trip a standard breaker, which is exactly the gap AFCIs close.
Because AFCIs are sensitive by design, nuisance tripping is sometimes blamed on the device. In practice, a repeatedly tripping AFCI is far more often reporting a real condition — a compromised cord or a loose connection — that deserves investigation.
Requirements for both device types vary by jurisdiction and by the age and scope of the work. Rather than guess, we assess what is installed and describe what the specific project would call for.
Safety first
If a protective device will not reset, do not remove or bypass it. It is signalling a condition on the circuit. Leave the circuit off and have it diagnosed.

What is the difference between GFCI and AFCI?
A GFCI protects people by cutting power when current leaks to ground, typically in wet areas. An AFCI protects property by detecting arcing conditions that can start fires, typically in living and sleeping areas.
How often should I test a GFCI?
Manufacturers commonly recommend testing monthly with the built-in TEST button. If it does not trip and reset properly, it should be replaced.
My GFCI keeps tripping. What does that mean?
It is detecting leakage current. Moisture, a failing appliance, or a wiring fault are common causes. Persistent tripping needs diagnosis rather than replacement of the device alone.
