The panel is the safety heart of the system. When breakers trip, buzz, or run warm, the answer is diagnosis — never a bigger breaker.
Understanding a tripping breaker
A breaker trips for a reason. The three usual causes are an overload (more current than the circuit is rated to carry), a short circuit (an unintended connection between conductors), and a ground fault (current leaking to ground). Each has a different fix, and telling them apart requires testing.
The pattern matters. A breaker that trips when the same appliance starts usually points to load or that appliance. A breaker that trips at random, or immediately after reset, more often indicates a fault in the wiring or a device. A breaker that trips only during rain can indicate moisture intrusion — common in coastal South Florida.
Repeatedly resetting a tripping breaker is the one thing to avoid. Each reset re-energizes a circuit the protective device already judged unsafe.
Panel evaluation
Panels age. Buses corrode in humid, salt-air environments, breakers lose calibration, and homes accumulate more load than the original design anticipated. We look at physical condition, available capacity, correct breaker types for the panel, grounding and bonding, and labeling.
When we find something outside routine repair — evidence of overheating, moisture in the enclosure, or equipment that should be replaced rather than repaired — we tell you plainly and describe the scope involved instead of doing partial work.
Safety first
Panel interiors contain conductors that stay energized even with the main breaker off. Never remove a panel cover. If you smell burning or hear crackling at the panel, keep people away from it and call us right away.
Questions we hear
My breaker trips every few days. Is that normal?
No. A breaker is doing its job when it trips, so repeated tripping means the circuit is overloaded or there is a fault. It should be diagnosed, not repeatedly reset.
Can I just install a larger breaker?
No. Breaker size is matched to the wire it protects. A larger breaker lets the wiring overheat before the breaker trips, which is a fire hazard.
How do I know if my panel needs attention?
Signs include no space for new circuits, rust or moisture, a burning smell, breakers that feel hot, or a panel brand known to be problematic. We evaluate and explain the options.
